London Southend Airport Extension Approved

London Southend Airport Extension Approved

Rochford Council have approved an extension to London Southend's Airport terminal creating over 300 jobs and extending the south-east’s aviation capacity.

With the plans to extend Heathrow’s capacity with a third runway fading into the distance for the time being, the new extension at Southend could prove to be a popular solution to the region’s capacity problems.

London Southend Airport opened its new terminal in February this year, boasting a speedy service for departing passengers with a maximum time of four minutes to get through security and arriving passengers with hand-luggage only can expect to disembark the plane and be on a train at the nearby station within 15 minutes.

The airport is keen to ensure that current standards are maintained whilst the terminal grows approximately 90 metres to facilitate the new check-in desks and baggage drop-off points.

The airport authorities are hoping that passenger numbers will grow to an estimated 2 million by 2020. The additional  facilities to accommodate the rising passenger numbers  means jobs created in retail, security and catering as well as airfield employment in engineering and maintenance.

Work is expected to start in the latter part of 2012.
