The Importance of London Theatre

The Importance of London TheatreFamilies looking for a post-Christmas treat may perk up at the news that Oscar Wilde's classic comedy of romantic intrigue, The Importance of Being Earnest, is coming to the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End in January 2008.

This delightfully clever comedy of manners rattles out puns and wordplay in an incessant flow of jibes and diatribes, and the structure is equally silly, with more twists in the plot than a tangled iPod cord.

London theatre welcomes Stewart as the Thane

London theatre welcomes Stewart as the ThaneStar Trek actor Patrick Stewart is to star in a West End staging of the Scottish play when the Chichester Festival production of Macbeth, directed by Rupert Goold, opens at the Gielgud Theatre on September 21st.

Although the Edinburgh Festival has ended, the spirit of theatricality that flourishes north of the border is nowhere better encapsulated than in Shakespeare's tragedy of family dysfunction, hubris and madness.

With some of the most rousing passages in the English language, the poetry and prose are unmatched and this production profits from a star with extensive Shakespearean experience behind him, including an award-winning turn as the eponymous hero in Othello at Washington DC's Shakespeare Theatre and a stint as the vicious Claudius in Hamlet in 1980, a role he is set to reprise with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2008.

It tells the story of a bachelor who deliberately disseminates a rumour that he is impotent, thereby catching husbands off their guard and obtaining private interviews with the most gorgeous wedded women of the country before making cuckolds of their unwitting spouses.
