Curtain finally rises on epic stage showThe Lord of the Rings, the most expensive musical in history, finally opened in the West End last night at the Theatre Royal after one of the longest previewing periods ever.

Previews for the £25 million show began at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in May, prompting many to buy West End theatre tickets for the spectacle which began its full run last night.

Matthew Warchus, director of the show, said: "To read the novel is to experience the events of Middle Earth in the mind's eye – only in the theatre are we actually plunged into the events as they happen."

Reality show stars set for West End theatre debutsThe culmination of the UK's two major television musical reality shows, Any Dream Will Do and Grease is the Word, finally came at the weekend.

Lee Mead secured the much-coveted lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, while Danny Bayne and Susan McFadden landed the parts of Danny and Sandy in fans' favourite Grease.

The weekend finals marked weeks of tears, cheers and high octane performances, as well as the running ratings battle between the BBC and ITV.

Singer to turn the West End blueFormer Blue member Duncan James is set to tread the boards in London's West End, after landing the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago.

The one-time boy band heartthrob will be taking on his latest project from July 2nd, having made the grand final of ITV's popular show Dancing on Ice earlier this year.

James will replace Dynasty star Maxwell Caulfield as the sleazy lawyer at the Cambridge Theatre.

West End to hold HairsprayTony-winning Broadway hit Hairspray is coming to London's West End this October, with the famous Shaftesbury Theatre to stage the popular musical.

The production is adapted from John Waters' 1988 film version, in which a young girl dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show, a local show based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show.

After becoming an overnight success, Tracy Turnblad then launches a campaign to racially integrate the Corny Collins Show.

The animated hero and his faithful dog Snowy are set to embark on a 17-week tour of UK theatres before finally hitting the West End in time for Christmas.

Tintin began life back in 1929, in a series of Belgian comic books created by artist Herge, the pen name of Georges Remi.
