TV stars join Hairspray castTheatre tickets may be in demand for Hairspray after it was announced that Nigel Planer and Verity Rushworth will join the production, which is running at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre.

Planer and Rushworth will take over from Ian Talbot and Elinor Collett respectively, playing Wilbur Turnblad and Penny Pingleton, the father and best friend of Leanne Jones’ Tracy Turnblad.

Theatre goers will be able to see the pair in action when both actors take up their new roles from February 9th.

Planer is perhaps best known for playing Neil in the cult BBC comedy The Young Ones and his musical credits include We Will Rock You, Chicago, Evita and most recently Wicked.

Rushworth joined the cast of popular ITV1 soap Emmerdale at the age of 12 back in 1998, in which she played Donna Windsor-Dingle.

She will leave the show at the end of this month before assuming her West End role.

Meanwhile, original stars Jones, Michael Ball and Ben James-Ellis have all extended their contracts until July 25th 2009.
