Summer is here and it is happy hour at FHR! Whether you want to unwind and enjoy the sun on the terrace or put on your heels ready for a night on the town, we have a list of the finest cocktail beverages enjoyed around the globe.

United Kingdom: Pimms Cup

pimmsIt is only fitting that we start this list with a classic British summer cocktail to whet your appetite.  This refreshing beverage was first served in the 1800s and is still a summer party starter. Pimm’s Cups are made in various ways, however, most mix Pimm’s No.1 gin with a lemonade or ginger ale, adding a fruity garnish, cucumber and mint leaves; creating a fruity meets spicy pick me up that is sure to go down a treat at any summer BBQ.

Puerto Rico: Pina Colada

The national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978; this sweet creamy cocktail has been enjoyed while relaxing and catching the summer rays on beaches and in bars all over the world. The mix of rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream served blended or shaken with ice will have you taking a ride on the sweet side of life.

Belgium: Black Russian

The first Black Russian cocktail was created in Brussels in 1949. The drink is made by pouring straight vodka over ice followed by coffee liqueur. There are variations to this, with many adding coca-cola to the mix. The unique blend of coffee flavours infused with vodka is like drinking your favourite creamy Starbucks treat with a kick.

Cuba: Mojito

mojitoHavana Cuba was where the Mojito was created by Cuban farmers. This minty masterpiece is traditionally made with white rum, lime juice, sugar, sparkling water and of course mint. Served on the rocks, this drink is refreshing with that added zing to get any party started and has become a classic cocktail served in bars all over the world.

Spain: Sangria

First tasted in 1964, this wine based punch has a fruity but dry taste that leaves you dreaming of a Spanish getaway. The punch is made by mixing wine (traditionally red), chopped fruit, brandy or orange juice. Best for summer parties and enjoying the outdoors, Sangria can be served in a punch bowl so that everyone can enjoy its delicious exotic flavours.

Bermuda: Dark ‘n’ Stormy

As the national drink of Bermuda, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy is a much-loved beverage for many. Mixing the few simple ingredients of Gosling dark rum and ginger beer garnished with a lime on top and served over ice, will create this rich and spicy flavoursome speciality.

Singapore: Singapore Sling

gin-slingThe Singapore Sling was created by a bar tender at the renowned Ruffles Hotel Singapore. The story behind the beverage is as sweet as the drink itself. Originally created by a bar tender in the early 1900’s so that women could enjoy an alcoholic treat at a time when it was regarded as highly inappropriate; this fun pink creation that nobody would question soon became socially acceptable. The gin based drink has become a huge hit, its sweetened flavours are enjoyed by men and women alike all over the world.

United States: Martini

Thought to have originated in San Francisco as the invention of bar tender Jerry Thomas in the 1870s, Martini is still an all time favourite. One of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages, this drink combines gin and vermouth and is garnished with an olive or lemon twist.
