Sardinia: Luxury versus Affordable

Sardinia is an Island in the Mediterranean situated directly under the Island of Corsica. It is an Italian island and is second largest only to Sicily. Although Italian, it is geographically not that close but rather its neighbours are French, Tunisian and Spanish! This diverse island is famous for its stunning beaches and boasts 1,150 miles of coastline. In the north of the Island there are some powder white soft sand beaches and you could be forgiven for thinking you have arrived in the Caribbean!

This Island, although not quite so well known to us here in the UK, is very popular with Italian holidaymakers and is therefore best avoided during the months of July and August. We visited in late September when many of the small towns and villages were almost deserted, and, in some cases, we were the only people on the beach, absolutely perfect! There are mountains through the centre of the island, with the highest peak reaching over 1,800 metres. There are dramatic cliffs that fall away into the sea and some beautiful drives that keep you on the edge of your seat. You can, of course, walk the coastal paths or ramble through alpine forests, if that is your thing.

Luxury Sardinia

For this option we have chosen The Hotel Marinedda Thalasso & SPA. It is situated in an historic fishing village overlooking the north-west coast of Sardinia on the Costa Rossa. This 5* hotel offers a very high standard of accommodation with views out over the Golfo dell’Asinara. It boasts a Spa centre which offers wellness packages designed especially for couples. The most luxurious room on offer is the President Suite with double bed and adjoining sitting room with two single sofa beds. It has a large veranda overlooking the sea. For a week in mid-September, the cost of this suite, including breakfast, brunch and dinner, is €4,452.

Affordable Sardinia

We have found a beautiful little apartment at the Residence Stella Di Gallura, 500 yards from the La Caletta beach in Porto Rotondo. The apartments are set in a garden complete with swimming pool and a traditional restaurant, which gets fantastic reviews. A one bedroom apartment for two people is £455 for a week in September and £594 for four people. This seems excellent value for money considering its amenities and location.

Flights to Sardinia

For the two options we have chosen, your nearest airport is Olbia. Flights are available with easyJet for around £250 in September from London Airports. Of course, as is always the case, these prices fluctuate and you could find yourself paying a little less or a little more!

Finally, if you decide to book your dream holiday on the island of Sardinia, don’t forget to book your Airport Parking and Airport Lounge through our website in plenty of time for your trip!
