Birmingham Airport closes overnight

Birmingham Airport closes overnight Birmingham Airport was forced to shut down last night (Thursday 12th July) following a security issue, BBC News reports.

The airport has since reopened and West Midlands police have suggested there is no security threat.

Security measures that were enacted included closure of the airport's rail link, as police carried out investigations.

"Although inquiries are ongoing the airport is now operating normally," a police spokesperson said.

Birmingham Airport is Britain's sixth busiest and handled over nine million flyers last year alone.

Any travellers concerned about delays as a result of the closure might wish to consider booking airport hotels, an airport parking space or airport lounges.

Meanwhile, recent reports revealed that low budget airline easyJet will be operating services from Birmingham Airport for the first time ever.

The low cost carrier had originally steered clear of Birmingham Airport because of the high handling charges.

However, David Osborne, easyJet's UK regional manager, has suggested the move will be great for Midlands-based skiers – as the new routes service Grenoble and Geneva.

"Our expansion in Birmingham reflects our commitment to growth across the UK, we recognise the strong demand for low-fares with convenience and Birmingham's great potential," he said.
