Ugly Betty star joins SpamalotSpamalot, the hit Monty Python spin-off currently showing in London, will welcome a new cast member this year – Ugly Betty star Alan Dale.

Dale plays publishing mogul Bradford Meade in the US comedy show, although he is also well known to Britons for once playing the character of Jim Robinson in Australian soap opera Neighbours.

He has also starred in hit American shows including The OC, Lost, The West Wing, 24, The X-Files and ER.

TV actor joins Hairspray cast

TV actor joins Hairspray castA well-known face from UK television is set to join the cast of Hairspray this month, according to reports.

Ian Talbot will take over the role of Wilbur Turnblad, the father of the central family in the story, from Mel Smith on January 28th.

The rest of the main players in the production – including Michael Ball as Edna Turnblad and Leanne Jones playing Tracy Turnblad – will continue in their roles until October 25th this year.

TV show runner-up to get Joseph chance

TV show runner-up to get Joseph chanceFollowers of the television show Any Dream Will Do will be interested to hear that the runner-up in the competition, Lewis Bradley, will have an opportunity to show what he can do in the role of Joseph.

Bradley will fill the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on weeks commencing January 14th and 21st, March 10th and May 5th.

He will be taking over the part while Lee Mead, winner of the talent show, is on holiday, according to the London Theatre Guide.

Theatre performers honoured

Theatre performers honouredA number of performers who have recently been lighting up the London theatre circuit were included in the Queen's 2008 New Year Honours List.

One of the most high-profile names on the list was that of Sir Ian McKellen, who was given the Order of the Companions of Honour.

McKellen gave a critically-lauded performance as King Lear in the Shakespeare play of the same name, sharing the stage with Frances Barber, who played Goneril, and Romola Garai as Cordelia.

Mamma Mia! booking period extended

Mamma Mia! booking period extendedTheatregoers in London will be able to catch popular musical Mamma Mia! for an extended time next year after it had its booking period lengthened.

The show was given a ten-month extension to its run and will now take bookings up to April 25th 2009.

Mamma Mia! has been showing at the Prince of Wales theatre since June 3rd 2004, following a transfer from the Prince Edward Theatre.

EastEnders star plans a stay in Rent

EastEnders star plans a stay in RentJessie Wallace, who played Kat Slater in EastEnders, is to star in West End musical Rent from December 24th this year.

The actress will take over the role of Maureen from another well known television personality, Denise Van Outen.

Wallace shot to fame playing the role of feisty ladette Kat in the BBC soap opera and has since appeared in television productions including A Class Apart and The Dinner Party.
