The Iranian, who has appeared in numerous films including The Mummy, Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean III, will take over the role from July 20th and is scheduled to appear in the show until December.

Djalili will join a cast which includes Jodie Prenger, the winner of the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, who will continue as Nancy.

The play’s producer Cameron Mackintosh explained that Djalili’s energetic acting ability would help the comedian make the role of Fagin his own.

"Undoubtedly the first Iranian ever to portray Dickens’ legendary Jewish creation, we all look forward to him becoming part of the family next July," he said.

Djalili has performed his stand-up routine in many UK and international tours, as well as critically acclaimed seasons at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
