Alternative Holidays for August Sun

There’s no denying that August is the busiest holiday month for Brits. If you have school age children, there’s a good chance you’ll be taking your family summer holiday in August. So, where can you go with – or without – the children for an enjoyable break in the sun?  We can’t promise you’ll avoid the crowds altogether, but these little gems are certainly quieter destinations for you in August.

Another little tip… if you have some flexibility and can wait until the end of August, prices start to come down, saving your hard-earned pennies!

Botswana

Average daily high: 26°C

Hours of sunshine: 11 hours

Average flight time from the UK: 10.5 hours

Time difference: +1 hour

August falls at the end of the winter season in Botswana, with long, dry sunny days but cold nights. Remember to pack layers of clothing! This is an ideal time to visit, as the heat starts to get intense in September, and by Christmas the days are very hot and there is rain and thunderstorms to contend with. With several parks and nature reserves to choose from across Botswana, this is the perfect time of year for wildlife watching. Animals of the savanna are reliant on limited water resources, making them easier to spot. As well as safari, Botswana is great for horse riding, fishing, and culture and history, such as the rock paintings on Tsodilo Hill.

Corsica

Average daily high: 27°C

Hours of sunshine: 12 hours

Average flight time from the UK: 2.5 hours

Time difference: +1 hour

Unspoiled coastline, secluded beaches and stunning scenery with a dramatic mountainous backdrop, are what you will find on the island of Corsica. A French island, sitting between France and Italy, Corsica is a hidden gem to most holidaymakers, and less crowded than the more popular Mediterranean resorts. With a blend of French and Italian influences, Corsica has its own unique, rich culture and traditions. August is characterised by long, sunny days and average sea temperatures of 24°C. Although daytime temperatures can be hot for some, cool sea breezes keep the climate just right for getting out and exploring this spectacular island.

Norway

Average daily high: 21°C

Hours of sunshine: 6 hours

Average flight time from the UK: 2 hours

Time difference: +1 hour

If you are less keen on very hot climes, Norway is the place for you. The weather in August is still warm and sunny, perfect for getting out and about, but the heat is comfortable rather than over bearing. Northern Norway experiences “midnight sun” at this time of year, and the nights don’t really get dark at all here. Norway has so much to offer, from the famous fjords and tiny fishing villages, through to expanses of woodland and breathtaking landscapes. The cities are at their quietest in August, when many locals take their own holidays. This vast country is the perfect location to enjoy an unforgettable holiday, and get away from the crowds.

Sardinia

Average daily high: 30°C

Hours of sunshine: 10 hours

Average flight time from the UK: 2 hours 45 mins

Time difference: +1 hour

Known as a windy island, you will appreciate the cool sea breeze on Sardinia in August, when temperatures can reach up to 30°C. Blissfully warm sea temperatures are ideal for water sports or splashing around in the sea. Chia, on the south coast, is renowned for it’s beautiful sandy bays, dunes and clear blue sea. It’s the perfect place to relax. Much of Sardinia is low key and peaceful. From charming traditional villages with welcoming trattorias, through to secluded coves and stunning landscapes, you are bound to fall in love with this mesmerising Italian island.
