If you like to travel on the scary side, then our top 3 spooky travel destinations will have you grabbing your passports ready to explore the unknown. However, if spine-tingling tourist attractions are not on your travel bucket list, we suggest looking away now!

Catacombs of Paris, France

Below the beautiful streets of Paris are former quarries that house millions of remains once buried in the city. During the 18th Century, Paris was experiencing a major problem with over run cemeteries. Graves were overcrowded, bodies were not buried properly and the risk to public health was severe.

In 1780, a long period of rainfall flooded the Les Innocents cemetery, exposing rotting corpses which in turn spilled into a neighbouring property. The city decided it needed to take action; with this they began to move more than 6 million bodies from the city’s cemeteries underground, a process that took over 12 years. Now these tunnels have become a hair-raising tourist attraction, where thrill seeking tourists take a journey below ground to explore the catacombs.

Pripyat, Ukraine

Eerie and deserted, Pripyat, Ukraine, has become a famous abandoned city for explorers. Since the city was evacuated following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 33 years ago, Pripyat, has remained deserted. Buildings still stand, with only the memories from photographs and weathered objects to inhabit them. Classrooms remain with books laid out just as the children left them, and a ferris wheel now left to rot, are the only signs of the lives that left this ghostly city.

The Island of Dolls, Mexico

Hundreds of old decaying dolls hang from trees on the Island of Dolls in the Canals of Xochimilco in Mexico. According to legend, the dolls were hung around the island by a caretaker to ward off spirits of a little girl who drowned. Many believe that the dolls are possessed by the little girl’s spirit, with some reporting that they can hear whispers as they explore the island. Whether you believe that spirits haunt the island or not, this popular attraction is not for the faint hearted.
